Every year, we have a couple of amazing friends who give us free apples, and applesauce is invariably the result.
There is this eternal strife in our house over how proper applesauce is made. I believe that the pureness of the apples should be preserved, enhanced with just a shake of cinnamon. My mother likes to add a bit of maple syrup. I don’t like to add sugar to fruit. We’ve had many conversations about this topic.
This issue is finally resolved in our family with this recipe. I absolutely love anything roasted, and the roasting changes all of the starches in the apples into sugars. The result? Perfect apple-y sweetness with no added sugar. You’re welcome.
- apples – as many as you can stand to peel!
- ground cinnamon – to taste
- water – as needed
- Preheat oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Peel and cut up apples.
- Place in 9 by 13 inch glass baking dishes or on cookies sheets. Toss with cinnamon to taste.
- Roast for 1 hour, or until very tender, stirring every 15 minutes. You may need to add a few tablespoons of water near the end of cooking to prevent the apples from becoming too dry.
