Every year, we have a couple of amazing friends who give us free apples, and applesauce is invariably the result.

There is this eternal strife in our house over how proper applesauce is made. I believe that the pureness of the apples should be preserved, enhanced with just a shake of cinnamon.  My mother likes to add a bit of maple syrup.  I don’t like to add sugar to fruit.  We’ve had many conversations about this topic.

This issue is finally resolved in our family with this recipe.  I absolutely love anything roasted, and the roasting changes all of the starches in the apples into sugars.  The result? Perfect apple-y sweetness with no added sugar.  You’re welcome.

Roasted Applesauce
Recipe Type: Snacks

Prep time: 30 mins
Cook time: 60 mins
Total time: 1 hour 30 mins
Serves: make a little or a lot!
Ingredients
  • apples – as many as you can stand to peel!
  • ground cinnamon – to taste
  • water – as needed
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Peel and cut up apples.
  3. Place in 9 by 13 inch glass baking dishes or on cookies sheets. Toss with cinnamon to taste.
  4. Roast for 1 hour, or until very tender, stirring every 15 minutes. You may need to add a few tablespoons of water near the end of cooking to prevent the apples from becoming too dry.
